Great Blue Heron Building a Nest
Earth Day in 2009 was celebrated by discovering an empty Hummingbird Nest
A Very Active Great Blue Heron Rookery (how many can you see?)
A few minutes later, an Anna`s Hummingbird flew in to join the celebration!
Holland Point Heron fishing at low tide
She was putting the finishing touches on her nest. You can see some of her nest building material on her beak.
Black Turnstones Flying Low Over Strait of Juan de Fuca
The very next day she laid her first egg.
Great Blue Heron Stretching
She laid her second egg two days later. Incubation normally runs 12 - 19 days, depending on the temperature.
Black Oystercatcher with its favourite food -- a limpet
She sat low in her nest to protect her eggs. Sadly, the nest disappeared just as her eggs were due to hatch.
